Pop music is a genre of music that produces the most hits in a year. While many people believe that the music arena is a men’s affair, the truth is that there are some women artists who have done wonders in pop music. The success of some of them is even more prevalent than what one could expect from a lady. Here is a list of some of the greatest female pop music artists of all time.
1. Mariah Carey
With close to 18 under her belt, Mariah Carey is one of the few currently recording artists who are in striking distance of overtaking the Beatles all-time record of twenty #1 pop singles in the United States. In fact, one of her songs “One Sweet Day” which was a collaboration with Boyz II Men spent four months at #1 on Billboard’s Top 100, which still remains a record up to date. Her melismatic approach and vocal range are both trademarks that have greatly influenced many other female vocalists in the last two decades.
2. Janet Jackson
At several points in her music career, Janet Jackson had threatened to overtake the achievements of Michael Jackson – her brother – in sales success and chart. Very few artists have been more influential than Janet Jackson in dance choreography which has accompanied most of her greatest hits. Besides being a music artist, Janet is also a renowned actor.
3. Britney Spears
Britney Spears was one of the greatest teen pop stars to come into the spotlight in the late 1990s. However, at about 2005 it appeared like her music career was being drowned in a mass of personal difficulties and bad publicity. However, it was not over for her as she put together one of the most unexpected comebacks in the history of pop music and went ahead to become more successful than she had ever been. In the past ten years, Britney Spears has released sixteen top 40 pop singles, five number 1 albums and is currently one of the best-known pop icons.
4. Whitney Houston
This pop artist is at times referred to as “The Voice.” She has powerful vocals that led to her massive pop success in the 80s and 90s. Whitney Houston was lucky to be born into music with her mother being a top studio singer. She was the first artists to have seven consecutive number 1 pop singles in the United States surpassing a record of six that had been set by Bee Gees and the Beatles.
